Message from Executive Director Rosemary Q. Steele

Fireworks and Grills Prohibited

As a Reminder: The Fourth of July celebrations are almost upon us. This will result in many people purchasing fireworks and having cookouts. We would like to remind our residents that cooking grills and fireworks are PROHIBITED on the THA property. The "NO GRILL" clause prohibits residents from using or storing grill on the property.

Fireworks and cooking grills also cause significant property loss and damage. Every year, fireworks cause approximately 18,500 fires. More fires are reported on July 4 than any other day of the year.

Any deviation from the Policy by any Resident, a member of their household, or their guest or visitor will be considered a lease violation and WILL result in a lease termination.

National Ice Cream Day. Three Ice cream cones.

Dish or cone? That's all we need to know. National Ice Cream Day on the 3rd Sunday in July offers up every flavor on the menu to honor the day! The holiday also lands in the middle of National Ice Cream Month.

U.S. Ice Cream Facts

  • Ben Franklin, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson enjoyed ice cream
  • 1813 -First Lady Dolley Madison served ice cream at the Inaugural Ball.
  • 1920 - Harry Burt puts the first ice cream trucks on the streets.
  • Thomas Jefferson - his recipe for Old Fashioned Vanilla Ice Cream is believed to be the oldest recipe for ice cream in the USA.

The Pride Lands of Learning. Summer STEM and Literacy Academy 2026.

Things have kicked off with the Summer STEM and Reading Academy in Partnership with Chair City Rising. Rising 3rd grade through 12th grade scholars come Monday through Thursday from 8am to 2pm doing various reading and STEM based activities. They start every morning with breakfast and positive affirmations. Then they break of into their designated groups for reading/ language arts activities. Afterwards they are served lunch and given time to
run off any extra energy. They then head to their designated area for project-based STEM activities.

If you are interested or know of a family who would be interested in this program, registrations are still being accepted. If you would like to register your student, please come to the Lois A. Hunter Life Skills Center to pick up a registration form or contact the center at 336.475.6137 ext. 201. Don't miss out on all the learning and fun!

School's Out Day: Mad Science Lab with THA

In honor of the last day of school on June 4th, the Thomasville Housing Authority hosted a School' s Out Day: Mad Science Lab. Kids from elementary school through high school came by to conduct fun and messy science experiments. They took an old cardboard box, some aluminum foil, black construction paper, and plastic wrap to create a solar oven to make s'mores. They also made simple slime and "elephant toothpaste" using warm water, yeast and dish soap.

Although the school year has ended, it is important to encourage Learning throughout the summer. It is the perfect time to pull concepts out of the classroom and bring them to life. Cooking can turn into a math lesson on fractions, an outdoor walk becomes a biology Lesson, and simple science experiments turn a hot afternoon into a hands-on lab.

We hope that this activity was the kickoff to an awesome summer!

SMART Start Tiny Tot Story Time

On June 8th, a few of our THA families enjoyed a Tiny Tot story time with SMART Start of Davidson County. They enjoyed an interactive story time where the kiddos were able to draw the characters, act out different parts of the story, and enjoy the sensory toys when they became overstimulated.

Here at the Thomasville Housing Authority, we want to engage and build a community for each family member no matter the age. We would Like to thank Andrea Coffman and SMART Start of Davidson County for coming out and showing our families a good time. The families really enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to the next story time.

Arts and Crafts with Save Our Babies

On June 8th, Ms. Sandra Canty from Save Our Babies hosted a fun afternoon of arts and crafts for a few of our young people. They created beautiful masterpieces while creating a special playlist while painting. The children ended the
class with a light snack and a round of the "compliment game". This is when you walk around a say one nice thing about someone else and/ or their art. That way everyone is able to feel good about their work.

We would like to thank Save Our Babies for a lovely afternoon and for being a partner of the Thomasville Housing Authority.

Juneteenth Celebration with THA

In honor of Juneteenth, The Thomasville Housing Authority had a day filled with laughter, creativity and overall fun. The day kicked off with a tie dye T-shirt making class. Everyone brought a T-shirt and used their creative freedom to create wearable art. Later that afternoon families from our community came and enjoyed a Juneteenth field day. There was music, arts and crafts, giant Jenga, giant connect 4, a football toss, even a game of three-on-three basketball in the gym. The highlight, however, would be the free all you can eat snow cones that everyone truly enjoyed.

Juneteenth is not just another holiday. It is about honoring the triumph of freedom, resilience, and the enduring power of community. On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation became the law that freed enslaved people, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to finally deliver the news that all enslaved people were free. While it was widely celebrated in Texas and surrounding states, it did not become a federal holiday until June 17, 2021, under President Joe Biden. Since then, celebrations began to spring up across the country.

We love the opportunity to celebrate with our THA families, and we look forward to continuing to build with our entire Thomasville community.
