Message from Executive Director Rosemary Q. Steele
With Thanksgiving approaching and the holidays just around the corner, we want to take this opportunity to thank every one of our staff members, our residents, and members of our community. Thank you for making our community a wonderful place to live and work. We hope you have a joyous and safe Thanksgiving holiday!
Free After-School Tutoring Hosted by Save Our Babies
In October, we kicked off the "FREE" after-school tutoring program sponsored by Save Our Babies. The kids are having a great time as they have an opportunity to get the help that they need and make new friends along the way. What makes it more special is that the older students have taken up the task of helping the younger students with homework and skill-building. The fall session ends December 17th, so be sure to sign your students up today. For more information call 336.475.6722.
Daylight Savings Time
It will officially end at 2:00 AM on Sunday, NOVEMBER 2, 2025.
Remember, as we "FALL BACK," set your clocks back one full hour, thus gaining one extra hour of sleep Saturday night.
Sewer Blockages:
Recently, there have been several sewer blockages due to flushing inappropriate items. You should Only flush toilet paper. This means No Flushable Wipes, QTips, Grease Hygiene Products, etc. These items belong in the trash, not in the toilet. If you are the household creating these issues, you will be charged for items removed from blocked drains.
A clogged sewer line is a serious problem and can even be considered a plumbing emergency. When pipes are blocked, wastewater has nowhere to go besides back up into your home, so please be conscious of what you are flushing and pouring down the drains.
The biggest offenders are non-flush-friendly items, grease, wipes, and hygiene products. Debris stops wastewater en route to the municipal sewer, causing sewage to back up into your home's drains.
- Pouring Grease Down Your Drain
One of the worst things you can pour down your drain is grease. Warm grease runs down your drain until it cools in the pipe, where it congeals to start forming a clog. - Flushing Wipes and Hygiene Products
Flushing wipes and hygiene products are among the most common causes of a blocked sewage line. "Flushable wipes", just because the package says "flushable", doesn't mean they are actually safe for the pipes; they are notorious for clogging drains.
Toilet paper is designed to dissolve in water, but other paper products like tissues and paper towels absorb water, meaning they won't break down when wet and may even expand in your pipelines.
Violation Notice
During our most recent USIG Inspections, we observed several lease violations.
Smoke/ Carbon Monoxide Detectors removed by the resident.
- Under no circumstances should a tenant disable or remove a smoke detector, as tampering with these devices endangers all occupants and can be a breach of the lease agreement. Charges will be assessed for removing detectors.
- 1st Offense: $50.00 + Labor
- 2nd Offense: $100.00 + Labor
Evidence of smoking in the unit
- This is a serious material breach of the lease. Per the THA's smoke-free policy, you are prohibited from smoking in or on the property
Damages and Poor Housekeeping
- You are responsible for maintaining cleanliness and general upkeep and for preventing pest infestations. Tenant-caused damage, conversely, results from a tenant's or their guest's neglect, abuse, carelessness, or accidental actions. All damages beyond normal wear and tear will be billed to the tenants.
Goodwill Northwest North Carolina - Level Up Employment & Resources Fair
More than fifteen local companies gathered at Lois A, Hunter Life Skills Center on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 for the Level UP Career and Resource Fair, an event designed to connect job seekers with local opportunities across various industries and provide much-needed resources. The Thomasville Housing Authority in partnership with Kimberley Horton of Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC to bridge the employment gap, specifically targeting individuals new to the workforce, those returning after an absence, those looking to switch careers and under-resourced workers. Opportunities were available in key sectors including advanced manufacturing, healthcare and education. This event offers job seekers an excellent opportunity to connect with a diverse range of employers from various industries. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about available positions, onsite interviews, as well as an opportunity to speak directly with hiring decision-makers at organizations. It was the perfect platform to explore career options and network with potential employers.
With resumes in hand and optimism in their hearts, a constant stream of neighborhood members arrived dressed to impress. More than thirty job seekers attended the event, which included employers like the Bradley Group, Novant Health, Pine Ridge Nursing Home, Always Best Care Senior Services, Ashley Furniture, FSS Staffing, RHA Health Services, and Davidson County Schools. They also had access to important resources to support their career and personal goals in the areas of housing assistance, business development, and education/training programs, such as Davidson-Davie Community College, AmeriHealth Caritas North Carolina, NCEB NC Medicaid, Graysway, Inc., The Arc of Davidson County, Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC, and Davidson Medical Ministries.
We would especially like to thank the Goodwill Industries of Northwest team for their ongoing collaboration with the Thomasville Housing Authority. They regularly go over interview techniques, resume writing, and recruiting tactics to help residents find their ideal jobs.
City Bus Stop on James Avenue - New Location
In Thomasville, Davidson County Transportation has a bus route. We sincerely thank the City of Thomasville for granting the Thomasville Housing Authority (THA) permission to operate a bus stop in the James Avenue neighborhood. However, the THA has decided to move the bus stop in front of the main office for the community's protection due to the recent criminal activities, the ongoing juvenile loitering, and the smoking at the bus stop. The bus stop area will only be accessible to those who are using the bus services. Violators will face legal action!
How to Help Avoid the Flu Virus
- Keep your hands clean: Wash your hands regularly, especially if you have been out in a public place where there is likely to be a multitude of germs.
- Disinfect your home: Ensure you're properly disinfecting, regularly spraying and wiping the surfaces with Lysol Disinfectant Spray or Lysol Disinfecting Wipes.
- Steer clear of anyone who is coughing or sneezing: Germs can potentially enter your body through the air you breathe. Stay at least 6 feet away from anyone who is actively coughing or sneezing.
- Get enough sleep: Keep your immune system strong by ensuring that you are getting enough sleep each night.
- Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables: Give your immune system another boost by eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, packed with important vitamins.
- Disinfect communal surfaces immediately after use: One of the best ways to try to avoid the flu is through disinfecting high-traffic surfaces as regularly as possible.
It's Time to Get Ready for Winter!
The Winter Season will soon be returning! Please take a moment to review these items, as you are responsible for maintaining the well-being of your home.
- Heater - If you have not done so already, please take a moment to turn on your furnace for a test. You might also take this time, as a reminder, to place a work order if we need to change the batteries in your thermostat, replace your furnace filter, and clear your air vents to ensure your unit is working to the best of its ability.
- Smoke / CO Detectors - Winter months bring more fire hazards. Please test and place a work order if not operating as designed. *Never disconnect or remove your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors:
- Window - make sure your windows are secure and locked
- Never use space heaters, kerosene heaters or your stove to heat your unit.
- Pay attention to weather reports and warnings of freezing weather and winter storms. Listen for emergency information and alerts
* If you are planning to be away for more than 7 days, please contact our office to let us know in advance. Also, make sure your heat is kept at a minimum of 55 degrees to avoid frozen pipes.
Thank you in advance for your attention to these matters. As always, we appreciate you taking responsibility.
Thomasville Housing Authority Annual Trunk or Treat
THA's 2025 Annual Trunk or Treat was a Huge Success. We are so happy our residents came out and enjoyed themselves. We would like to thank all of our partners that came out, and we thank you for your support. Families gathered at the Thomasville Housing Authority for a Trunk or Treat event aimed at giving children a safe place to celebrate Halloween while strengthening relationships between the community. We had such a spooktacular time at our Trunk or Treat.
The Best decorated car was Mr. & Mrs. Ron Richardson (Frog and Prince)
Family Services of Davidson County
Do Something to End Domestic Violence
Thomasville Housing Authority - Empowering People - Changing Lives
Family Services is presenting designated sessions to educate the public about the prevalence and severity of domestic violence. Domestic violence encompasses a wide range of abuses, including physical, emotional, psychological, and financial. Domestic and family violence happens when one person in a relationship uses violence or abuse to gain and maintain control over the other person. Domestic and family violence is usually an ongoing pattern of behavior that causes the victim of the abuse and violence to feel afraid and unsafe. Some people use violence and controlling behavior to maintain power in their relationships with those they are meant to care about.
Are you a victim of Domestic Violence? Do you know someone who is? Are you a survivor of Domestic Violence? Do you suspect that a friend or family member is being abused, and you are not sure what to do? Do you know someone who is being abused and wants to help? Has a friend, family member, or someone in your community (such as a neighbor or work colleague) approached you and talked about abuse or violence in their relationships? If you answered "yes" to one or more of these questions, then you are aware that increasing awareness of domestic violence is fundamental. The first step in comprehending abuse cycles is awareness.
Please come out, get involved in dismantling the stigma and silence around DV. Join us in healing as one on:
- On Wednesday, November 6, 2025, at 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
- On Wednesday, November 20, 2025, at 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
Location:
Lois A. Hunter Life Skills Center
205 James Avenue
Thomasville, NC 27360
Understanding what to do and where to go if you are in a DV relationship. Family Services is a beacon of hope, a call to action and a reminder that, collectively, we can work toward a better society where everyone can live free from abuse. Through fostering dialogue, awareness, and community engagement around domestic violence, we become a united front against abuse. By coming together, we are creating safer, more inclusive environments and building safe communities.
Our goal is to make the community safer and more knowledgeable. Domestic violence classes give you all the information and resources you need to start down the right path. These sessions can give you lots of information, and sometimes it can help to have someone to help you work through the information, as well as someone to talk through your experiences with.
